History
My parents never had a motor car, but being born in Birmingham, growing up in the Midlands, I was surrounded by motor car manufacturers and was, as a small child, fascinated by motor cars. I never missed an opportunity for a ride in a car and the faster it went the better. At the age of 17 with the proceeds of a spare time job at a garage, I bought my first car, a 1928 Humber 14/40 tourer, leaned to drive in it and passed my test in it. Although I only kept it for about 2 years (it was sacrificed for a very early Lagonda 2-litre saloon), in 1989 the business was able to buy it back and is now, above any other car we have, “The” family car.
I started the business in 1971 rather by accident, after finding that being a school teacher was not really for me and my passion for old cars could be put to good use. In 1988 Mark my eldest son joined the business, after a 9 year spell in the army and then in 1993 Michael also joint the family business.
As children the boys and their younger sister travelled thousands of miles in the dickey seat of a 1929 Sunbeam 20.9 two seat tourer with dickey, to various events such as race meetings, hill climbs and trials, combined with pub meets and longer european tours. Much of this time they spent out in the open in all weathers, as the front seat passengers, we were nicely tucked in under the hood, with side screens fitted.
We all use older cars, usually vintage and pre-war, the earlier the better, but do also run more modern classics. The first car Mark bought himself whilst still in the army was a 1957 Triumph TR3 and this was his daily run-around for about 2 ½ years.
We all take part in many events both sporting and touring, with the Vintage Sports Car Club and its registers and also with an assortment of other foreign clubs. We also organise the Winter Driving Tests for the VSCC and have been doing so for over 30 years.
We are all first and foremost enthusiasts.
